Written Off Again!

"write off"
1. To reduce to zero the book value of (an asset that has become worthless).
2. To cancel from accounts as a loss.
3. To consider as a loss or failure
: wrote off the rainy first day of the vacation.

It has happened again to me. Before the season or even training has had the chance to kick in I have been written off by the (I would say pundits) RAF. This actually hurts and is such a disappointment in my eyes I can only respond in one way. A verbal torrent seems appropriate.

After a few years of being shelved the RAF Tri magazine (triangles) is back and in circulation. Now I was a fan when it first came out and submitted many articles which was great reading. Back and under the direction of Sags it seems to be a kick in the teeth. I was browsing the RAF Tri website and forum when I noticed a tread and after looking through it there seemed to be a few digs at me for some reason. So I looked further and found a few things that had me thinking and eventually tipped the balance.
I am not considered a contender or even respected at triathlon despite picking up a few team trophies over the years and finishing consistently in the top ten at RAF sprint races (when I have had the opportunity to race and not help organise). It then made me question am I taken for granted....and I am, it is almost expected of me now.
Like it says in the dictionary a failure, times must change......starting now!

  1. Like I said in the article, there will be names missed off the list - no offence intended! However, check out the results from the last few years of Inter-Services competition at Standard Distance. Ask yourself, are you a contender amongst the guys mentioned? You will notice that I do not consider myself a contender, should everyone perform up to standard (turning up would help too!)Hopefully you will be fired up enough to beat the names listed.....burn bright Mike and train to win!

  2. ....thinking further about this post on the way home... you are missing the point. You are appreciated; the Int Services would not have even taken place without you! Fast racers aren't necessary appreciated for anything other than racing fast. What does Fish do for the association other than race fast; whereas you do heaps and are appreciated. Is your gripe about not being considered a fast racer or not being appreciated? Remember fast is all relative - to some you are fast, to others you are not...simple! I could be taking this far too seriously! That's the difficulty of the written word! You sometimes can't see the irony!

  3. as Sags says mate, you are appreciated and without you a lot of organisation wouldn't get done. As for contenders, we all have to accept that there will always be someone out there that can kick are arse! Don't let it get you down mate, I think you have maybe read to much in to triangles which is at the end of the day a bit of fun for the masses.

  4. Hi Mike,
The odd person has left a few eyebrow raising/slap worthy comments, you are right.
Perceived or real slights - most of us have been there at some point. Take any pent up frustration and use it to your advantage, whether to push you on or get to that never a before achieved power to weight ratio.
There is no doubt in my mind that you have the ability to get right up there if you really go for it. Keep your chin up.

As for your organisational efforts, 'true happiness comes from bring joy to others - Dalai Lama'. Sometimes it doesn't feel like it at the time though.

  5. Young Mike

We've known each other for a number of years and right from the beginning there has always been banter. But amidst all the banter that comes your way there is also much appreciation and gratitude for all the work you do, not just for RAF Tri but also your work as a referee.

Feel the love; it's that time of year.
