"Mike Masters is an enthusiastic, capable and amiable athlete whose contribution to sport has had a significant impact at RAF Coningsby and the wider community.
As an athlete he competes in a myriad of sports including swimming, cross-country and cycling but it is as a triathlete that Mike has excelled. In 2007 he was 14th and 31st at the European and World (Age Group) Long Course Triathlon Championships respectively. In 2008 he followed this with an outstanding 19th place at the World Age Group Championship, a race which included 4500m of swimming, 120K of biking and 30K of running.
Mike is not known only for his abilities as an athlete. Mike's enthusiasm really shines through in his role as a Triathlon coach. He is a regular supporter of RAF Triathlon training camps and is a valuable member of the coaching staff. His approachable and friendly demeanour means that he is particularly effective in developing grass roots talent.
Most importantly though is Mike's position as a national standard referee. He has been responsible for the safe and successful execution of a number of triathlon events throughout the year including the RAF and UK National Championships.
In short Mike Masters is a talented athlete, coach and referee. He is a popular figure within the triathlon community known for his integrity, judgement and ability and as such is an ambassador for the Armed Forces. He is therefore a deserving winner of the RAF Coningsby Sports Personality of the Year."
I would like to thank everyone for their support over the years and this is as deserving to you all and not just me.
