After a week of intense studying and training (lies and more lies) I went to the lake for a morning swim and acclimatisation. I only intended on taking it easy and went for a 1k lap followed by a 200 sprint with 200 recovery and transition. I was fantastic and great to see more guys swimming in the lake and hopefully over the next few months we will be able to have a healthy group of swimmers. Mind you I only went for the full English breakfast afterwards. Nice and greasy and the perfect prize for all that hard work. However on the way back to the car I peared over the bridge and looked into the old lake that we used to swim in and noticed these huge chubbs, I think I will not be going back in there anytime soon.
The main focus though was on the Lincs RRA 50mTT this afternoon. I have done the distance before and was hoping for some fast times. One draw back though, well maybe two. Windy and Rolling. The course was the same as last Sundays and included a 7mile stretch of climbing which had me crawling along at 32kmph into the wind. after turning I was able to put my foot down and try and chase down the only person at the time in front of me who was just 40 seconds away. With the wind behind me and my head down I was speeding along comfortably for about 15k at 45-55kmph which was great considering I was now down to the last 20 for the turn back into the wind and had the gap now down to 25 seconds. However this is where the wheels came of and I just blew up into the wind the gap increased and I could see him moving away from me, on the plus side I had managed to make a considerable gap between me and the next guy of about 4 minutes, this would disappear quickly though. Ridding on empty is not fun and I have to say demoralising. Partly my fault for not carrying more fluid and solids but when have I needed 1.5 litres on the bike and that felt like enough at the time.
I managed to finish in 14th overall in a respectable time of 2:14:20 and also first Lincs Senior the winning time was 1:56 and a vet so I'm not to beat up about it. next event for me is Beaver I just hope I don't blow up on that one.
Nice one Mike. There is only one more thing more painful than riding on empty......running on empty! i did just that in the London Marathon for the last 6 miles and oh how I suffered! Great that you battled on and still came away with a decent time....respect! Watch out for those vets though! they race everywhere!! Just think, in 15 years time you will be flying!!
