2013 - A season in review

Another season comes to an end with a exciting race in Hawaii. This season has been full of ups and downs for so many athletes. The Brownlees came back from early season injuries and looked on course for a dramatic win in Hyde Park only for the ever in-form Gomez to win his 3rd world title. A quicker and leaner Catherine Faux smashed the field apart to finish 10th female and 1st AG female in Kona. It wont be long before she is in the top 100 overall finishers at Kona especially as she was only 23 mins behind the 2013 female winner Mirinda Carfrae. Good work and well done Dr J Coaching.

My Athletes have also come through a tough season. I have had 2 on the books full time 1 who has had repeated bad luck and injuries over the last few seasons. To most people it would have ended any competition they did. To her it became a new challenge to overcome. We worked hard all season, tackled her weaknesses and honed her strengths and reaped the rewards of losing weight, racing stronger than ever but also feeling positive about some of the uncertainties ahead. The other we have had limited contact but when we do it is quality sessions. Throughout the year it has been about management of expectations and understanding of what he can achieve with limited time and how to avoid the injuries. Great work guys.

As a coach my athletes have achieved a 1st place female vet. several top 10 finishes including in the World Championships in Belfort, Fra and a 6th in AG at Lanzarote 1/2 IM. 26 Athletes signed up to the RAF Sprint series Training plan on Training peaks  with a further 15 following the Dambuster plan. Not bad as my first full season coaching. Next year I have an athlete who could potentially go under 10:30 at IM and a few first timers following the Outlaw and IM Austria plans. With my involvement in the World Duathlon Champs, Pontevedra, Esp (Technical Delegate) and the potential of working at the Commonwealth Games, I think 2014 is set to eclipse anything I have achieved so far.

My highlights of 2013 are:
  • Chief Registration Official - World Triathlon Series Grand Final, London (GBR) and watching that fantastic finish and experiencing the entire week long festival of triathlon. The picture tells you how good it was and how great everyone else was.
  • Assistant Technical Delegate - World Long Distance Triathlon Championships, Belfort (FRA) I was working for over 6 months with the best team ever assembled for the such an event and no matter what was thrown at us we delivered one of the best events.
  • RAF Sports Official of the year 2012 and runner up at Combined Sports Dinner
  • Coaching with the Welsh Performance Squad. Later on in the year I would witness 3 of these athletes medal at National Championships and World Championships. Wales has a lot of talent coming through the system.
