They say it only rains in Rutland, well today the sun shone thought the clouds however the wind upset the balance and any chance of a very fast time from our winner. Mike Westwell who exited the water in a good time behind the main bunch and quickly made progress through the field to the front where he remained for the run. A very strong show from the young guns of the RAF with Jase Walkley being edged into 4th by Mat Stephenson holding on to 3rd after a strong run from Dom Sanderson. Bev dominated from start to finish and managed to also pick up 3rd in her extended AG, whilst Maria Prout took 2nd place and 2nd in her AG.
I managed to exit the water in 4th place only to allow everyone to overtake as I cramped up on the run into transition which also added a few valuable seconds. Unable to get going and a few minor mechanical issues I soon settled down and plodded around in 1:15 which I have to say with the wind and looking at the times of Nige Porter I am disappointed with as I know I can easily be a few minutes up on the former RAF champ on the day.
Out on the run and having to run on the grass to preserve my foot for as long as possible I was able to keep everyone in sight and enjoy a good pace as well as being at the front of the field. Pre season I had plans for 2:15. Before the race I said that I would pace for 2:20. Five years after completing my first triathlon at Dambuster I returned and enjoyed my comfortable 2:19:55.
2 week intense training at Lossie is now in order before Cranwell and the National Aquathon Champs in wales. All that is left to say now is Sags please don't forget to pick me!
